Tue 21st Nov 2017Cambiaso’s 100th Argentine Open MatchBusy weekend of big scores in Argentine Open
Over the weekend, crowds were treated to big scores and historic appearances. On Saturday 18 November, both of the matches played in Palermo were whitewashes, with La Dolfina dominating La Irenita with a one-sided score of 21-4, whilst La Albertina Abu Dhabi crushed La Esquina Los Machitos 17-8 which meant La Esquina have been eliminated from the tournament and will not qualify for 2018. The win was a first for La Albertina in the tournament and means they have improved their chances of qualifying for next year’s tournament. For La Dolfina, it was an auspicious day, as not only was it their third straight win of over 20 goals, but all four players scored. To add the cherry on the cake it was a special day for Cambiaso, as it was his 100th Argentine Open match; not only this, but he played the eighth chukka on the legendary Cuartetera and a Cuartetera clone in every chukka before that – a huge achievement. The following day, Sunday 19 November, was the eighth day of the competition. The first match of the day saw La Dolfina Polo Ranch beat Chapaleufú 10-8, this result meant that Chapaleufú will not qualify for the 2018 tournament. Next-up, Cría Yatay faced Ellerstina on Field 1 who despite their best efforts, struggled to gain an advantage over the indomitable Pieres team, and suffered a 14-6 defeat. These results mean that Ellerstina, Alegría, La Aguada Las Monjitas and La Dolfina are already classified for the 2018 Triple Crown, whilst Cría Yatay, La Irenita, La Albertina and La Dolfina Polo Ranch will all be trying to avoid relegation and losing out on a place in the 2018 Triple Crown. The action continues at the weekend with La Irenita vs La Albertina Abu Dhabi and La Dolfina vs La Aguada Las Monjitas on Saturday 25 November, whilst on Sunday 26 November, Cría Yatay will face La Dolfina Polo Ranch and Ellerstina will play against Alegría.
