Thu 30th Jun 2016Going for Gold Day 8Wins for Apes Hill, Clarke & Green and Britannia El Remanso
It was a busy day at Cowdray Park Polo Club for the eighth day of games in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open on Wednesday 29 June. Apes Hill, Clarke & Green and Britannia El Remanso all took wins despite a classically wet summer afternoon. In the first game of the day, Apes Hill defeated La Bamba de Areco after a close game where both teams traded time in the lead throughout the chukkas. Eduardo Novillo Astrada’s five goals led the Apes Hill attack whilst Mark Tomlinson added four goals and Alec White scored twice for their 11-10 win. Their next game will be against Zacara on Tuesday 5 July. La Bamba de Areco’s scoring was made up of five goals from Diego Cavanagh who set the pace for the La Bamba de Areco offense, whilst the team’s patron Jean Francois Decaux added three goals and Magoo Laprida scored twice. Their next game will be against RH Polo on Monday 4 July. In the second game of the day Clarke & Green took out HB Polo with a final score of 12-11 in another close contest. HB Polo ended the first chukka trailing by two goals, but swung it around in the second to lead by two with a score of 5-3. They continued their lead ending the first half of the game 6-5, then extending their lead in the fourth chukka 8-6, and the fifth chukka looked promising again for an HB Polo win as they steadied on a score of 9-7. It all fell apart in the sixth chukka as both teams frantically fought for a win. Juan Gris Zavaleta’s last second goal forced the game into extra time and Luke Tomlinson was the Clarke & Green hero scoring the winning golden goal. On Saturday 2 July Clarke & Green will play King Power Foxes and HB Polo will play Zacara. In the third and final game on a wet Wednesday, Britannia El Remanso defeated Cowdray Vikings 9-6. The first chukka failed to ignite scoring mayhem from either side as the teams changed horses for the second chukka with a score of 1-1. The second chukka was a similar story ending 2-2. Cowdray Vikings were the first to take the lead ending the first half 4-3 and then the fourth chukka ended 5-4 still in their favour. Britannia El Remanso took control of the fifth chukka with James Harper and Ollie Cudmore taking charge of the goal scoring to take a three goal lead for the first time in the game with a score of 8-5. The final chukka saw each team add a goal, but the banked goals from Britannia El Remanso earlier in the game were enough to secure their win.
