Feeling charitable?

Polo people working hard to raise money

On Saturday 25 April an earthquake registering 7.9 on the Richter scale in Nepal devastated the country and many of the surrounding regions. Thousands of people have been killed and many more left without shelter, food or clean water. Many more have been badly injured and are still waiting for international aid to help them. Ang Tshering, who was with the Mongolian Polo Team which participated in the 150th Anniversary games at Manipur which was featured in our March issue of Polo Times has set up a page to raise money for the Bir Hospital in Kathmandu to help some of their badly injured patients. Please click here if you would like to know more about the project and donate to the cause.

A day after the earthquake Lucy Northmore of Polo Networks swapped four legs for two to take part in the London Marathon to raise funds for the NSPCC. It is the second time that Lucy has run the marathon and this year she completed it in 4 hours and 34 minutes. The NSPCC is a leading UK children’s charity that fights against child abuse in the UK and Channel Islands. Click here to donate to the NSPCC.

Heather Lodder, the new Sponsorship Director at Guards Polo Club along with her brother, Alex Jacobs, Princess Tamara Czartoryski and Malta Richter took on a Tough Mudder challenge for War Child and Battersea Dogs Home. The team spent four hours on Saturday 2 May running, crawling and climbing through muddy obstacles spread over 12 miles of The Culden Faw Estate in Henley on Thames. The charitable efforts of the polo community doesn’t stop there with a whole starting gate of players swapping their polo shirts for silks to take part in the Starlight Charity race at Newbury racecourse 15 May. The line-up includes Tommy Severn, Sarah Henderson, Sophie Heaton-Ellis as well as Edgeworth Polo Club’s Jono Smail and Jess Hinaman. Click here to donate to Jono Smail’s Starlight donation page.

Looking ahead, the Gloucestershire Committee of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity will be hosting a talk by Peter Snow CBE on Saturday 4 July. Snow, a well-known historian, television and radio presenter, will be discussing the battle of Waterloo from 7.30pm at Cheltenham College Prep School. Click here to email Lt Colonel Richard Miller for tickets, which are £30 for the evening.
