Wed 17th Sep 2014Guards’ team starts new tournament with a winThe International Series in Brazil gets underway with all four teams enjoying their games at Helvetica Polo Club
The first league matches in the Guards International Sao Paulo Polo Tournament were played at Helvetia Polo Club on Tuesday. This was the first opportunity for the Guards’ patrons to find out how well their ponies would play in the heat of a game on the fast number one ground at this leading Brazilian polo club. First up in the Guards International Sao Paulo Polo Tournament was 17-year-old Charlie Pidgley and the Guards team v Sao Paulo resident Eitan Koren and his TeleAtlantic squad. Neil Hobday, Guards Polo Club CEO had flown into Brazil earlier that morning to be in the stands to watch the team win 8-6. The match scores swung from one side to the other throughout the match which bodes well for plenty of great sport later in the week. Next up was Alex Brodie and the EFG Bank team v Grant Mayer and the Yaguara team. EFG were flying down the field from the first whistle and were 5-2 up at half-time. Yaguara closed the gap in the third but a couple of missed shots at goal gave EFG the chance to pull away again, winning 8-4. Win or lose all the patrons returned to the Clubhouse happy, having played on the grounds at Helvetia. Of course this was only day one and all the teams will be upping their games as the week progresses. The spectators for the first round of games included the team from La Martina - Brasil, Louisa Dawnay and Diana Butler from Guards Polo Club, Tony Ramirez from Images of Polo and many players from Helvetia who wanted to find out more about the first Guards International Sao Paulo Polo Trophy.
