Zacara defends US Open title
Lyndon Lea's team win the US Open for the second year in a row
ZACARA RETAINED THE Maserati US Open title, when they defeated Valiente 16-13 in Sunday's final.
Patron Lyndon Lea was joined by Facundo Pieres, Cristian “Magoo” Laprida and Mike Azzaro – the same line-up as in 2012 – and the team lifted the trophy for the second consecutive year at International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPCPB).
The teams were neck-and-neck throughout most of the match, with the scores tied eight times and over half the goals scored on penalties. Going into the final chukka it was anyone's game, but as Zacara edged in front, the Valiente side of Bob Jornayvaz, Adolfo Cambiaso, Santi Torres and David “Pelon” Stirling began to look flustered, giving away some crucial penalities, and it was Zacara who walked away with the victory.
Pieres was named most valuable player, having scored twelve goals, and Bob Jornayvaz's Medallion, played by Pelon Stirling, received the best playing pony prize.
Earlier in the week, Faraway defeated 11-10 in overtime to win the subsidiary Hall of Fame Cup final.
