Wed 3rd Jun 2026The La Martina Varsity Day Student polo takes centre stage at Smith’s Lawn
Some of the brightest young talent in university and school polo gathered at Smith’s Lawn on Saturday 30 May. The showcase of student polo, with a packed programme of competitive matches, culminated in the historic Varsity showdown between Oxford University and Cambridge University.
The day began with the Oxford Old Blues taking on the Cambridge Old Blues in a closely fought contest. After a hard-fought encounter, Oxford emerged victorious with a 4-3 win.
Attention then turned to the school’s competition, where Harrow School faced Eton College. Eton delivered an impressive display to secure a convincing 9-2 victory.
A new addition to this year’s schedule was the Power of Polo Charity Match, featuring Power of Polo ambassadors and players from Oxford and Cambridge. The entertaining fixture saw both sides battle for the charity trophy, with the Power of Polo side ultimately claiming a 9-7 triumph.
The day concluded with the eagerly anticipated Varsity Match between the Oxford University Polo Club and Cambridge University Polo Club. A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch Oxford produce a dominant performance, defeating their historic rivals 12-0 and retaining the title for a second consecutive year.
The match was made even more special by the presence of Cameron Walton-Masters, who was on hand to present the trophy. The prize was awarded in memory of his father, David Walton-Masters, a former University polo champion and a respected supporter of the student game. A fine demonstration of the future of polo and a celebration of a historic and friendly rivalry, it was a great day at sunny Guards Polo Club.
