Polo Times has learned the sad news of the death of Major Hugh Dawnay, who passed away this morning (28 May). Dawnay had been suffering with serious illness for the past few months.
The renowned coach and author of Polo Vision and Playmaker Polo reached a handicap of three-goals while serving in the Army and captained his regimental team and British Army team. In 1976 he opened the Whitfield Court Polo School in Waterford, Ireland, where he coached up until its closure in 2002. Last year, Dawnay - who's son Sebastian is an eight-goaler in the arena - created the Playmaker Challenge, which was rolled out at various clubs.
A full obituary will feature in the July issue of Polo Times. The June issue is on its way to subscribers this week.
