Bronze Cup Opens Sotogrande Season

The Spanish triple crown is underway with leg one complete

The 55th International Polo Tournament is in full swing in Sotogrande with an exciting weekend of Bronze Cup Finals at Ayala Polo Club, crowning champions across the High, Medium and Low Goal divisions before attention turns to the Terralpa Silver Cup, which begins this week.

In the High Goal Final, Ayala produced a dominant second-half performance to defeat Dos Lunas IQ 13-8 and lift their first Sotogrande high goal title since winning the Silver Cup in 2021. After trailing 6-5 at halftime, Camilo ‘Jeta’ Castagnola inspired a four-goal fourth chukka to swing the momentum firmly in Ayala's favour before guiding his side to victory. Castagnola was later named Most Valuable Player.

The Medium Goal Final produced one of the comebacks of the weekend as John Smith recovered from a 7-4 deficit with two chukkas remaining to defeat P1 Cars El Bambú 11-8. Alejandro Muzzio scored eight goals, including the decisive strikes in the closing stages, to earn Most Valuable Player honours.

Meanwhile, Vamos Korea claimed the Low Goal Bronze Cup with an emphatic 12-5½ victory over Polothanda. Led by Nicolás Pieres, alongside the next generation of the Pieres and Stirling families in Indalecio Pieres and Vicente Stirling, Vamos Korea controlled the Final from the second chukka onwards to seal the opening title of the low goal season.

The 55th International Polo Tournament now moves on to the Terralpa Silver Cup, with the competition well underway with multiple matches per day in a busy tournament schedule running until the Final on Saturday 15 August.
