Fri 26th Sep 20252025 Singureni Manor Polo Cup Record numbers, VIP luxury and celebrities aplenty at world-famous Romanian tournament
Today, Friday 26th September sees the second edition of The Singureni Manor Polo Cup, which made history last year as Romania’s first ever polo tournament. The three days of polo and lavish hospitality are once again a sellout with over 1,000 VIP spectators a day flocking to the stunning setting of Singureni Manor to watch the four international teams compete for the title.
Polo is an international community, with the sport played across the globe – from the snow-covered alpine peaks in St. Moritz to the ‘Cathedral of Polo’ itself in Buenos Aires, and this year’s Singureni Manor Polo Cup highlighted the international aspect of the sport with 20 Ambassadors attending this milestone event. HE Ambassador to Switzerland, Massimo Baggi is competing again this year, this time in the same team as Singureni Polo Sports Club Association Founder and driving force behind the tournament, Cristina Roșu.
To kick things off, yesterday’s players and VIPs celebrated the start of the event with a lavish reception hosted at the Hotel Corinthia, Budapest. A players’ presentation introduced the international polo stars due to entertain guests over the weekend. In addition, an impressive list of sponsors were announced, their burgeoning ranks are testament to the success of last year’s inaugural event and the popularity of polo in Romania in this second year.
Angela Gheorghiu, hailed as “the world’s most glamorous opera star” opened the second edition of The Singureni Manor Polo Cup 2025 with a unique opera recital, which was a fitting start to such a momentous event in the Romanian calendar. English actor Ed Westwick threw in the ball for the first match of this year’s tournament. VIP guests, celebrities, the world’s media and photographers lined the arena, enjoying the live music, pumping tunes from DJ Erok, trade stands and exquisite Romanian food and drink on offer.
Today’s action started in warm sunshine in an even bigger and better arena, complete with a skilled international team of officials bringing worldwide expertise to proceedings, all masterminded by “The Godfather of snow polo” Reto Gaudenzi, World Polo Founder and President – once again proving that his experience of organising over 100 polo events worldwide brings an efficiency, elan and efficiency unparalleled elsewhere.
Polo Match 1: Team AQUA Carpatica / Grand Champions Polo Club Wellington vs Team CORINTHIA/SASS’ Restaurant & Lounge / Maltese Falcons, Malta:
The first match saw 2024 champions Team CORINTHIA/SASS’ Restaurant & Lounge / Maltese Falcons, Malta return to defend their title with a wealth of experience and team familiarity on their side, making them strong contenders. Lining up on the opposing side was Team AQUA Carpatica / Grand Champions Polo Club Wellington, featuring both the highest handicapped player in the tournament – 9 goaler Nic Roldan – and the youngest player in the tournament – Silvestre ‘Silver’ Novillo Astrada at just 14-years-old. In the inaugural match last year, high goal superstar Nic Roldan scored the first ever goal in Romania and followed this tradition again by effortlessly slotting the ball through the posts in the first seconds of the game. This energy from Roldan was unrelenting through the four-chukka match, ably backed up by his teammates who kept up the pressure throughout with all three players, including Team Captain and the first woman to win the title Melissa Ganzi, getting onto the scoreboard. Both sides battled fiercely, cheered on by the packed VIP Tent, with Jan-Erik Franck and Maxxi Radu Munteanu keeping the crowds informed in both English and Romanian, whilst DJ Erok kept the atmosphere buzzing; and in the end, the score went right down to the wire with a final score of 10-9 in favour of the defending champions, Team CORINTHIA/SASS’ Restaurant & Lounge / Maltese Falcons.
Polo Match 2: Team OSCAR / Singureni Manor Polo Club, Romania vs. Team CARPATHIAN / Norddeutscher Polo Club, Germany:
The second match marked Christian Grimme, Agustin Wagner and Lukas Sdrenka’s debuts at The Singureni Manor Polo Cup, but all three players are no strangers to arena polo, using the winter season in Germany to hone their arena skills. They put up a strong fight against the home team, and crowd favourites Team OSCAR / Singureni Manor Polo Club, Romania featuring Singureni Manor’s very own Cristina Roșu in the Number 1 position. Team CARPATHIAN / Norddeutscher Polo Club, Germany began with a 1½ goal handicap advantage, but Team OSCAR / Singureni Manor Polo Club quickly leapt onto the scoreboard and by the end of the first half had taken the lead, 6-4½ with not one but two goals from Roșu. The dynamic duo of Adrian Laplacette Jr. and Agustin Kronhaus continued to combine seamlessly in the second half, with HE Massimo Baggi stepping into the arena and swapping over from Roșu. The home team delighted the crowds with the 9-5½ lead going into the crucial fourth chukka and although Team CARPATHIAN / Norddeutscher Polo Club increased the tempo in the last seven minutes, it was too little too late and Team OSCAR / Singureni Manor Polo Club secured their first win of the tournament, 11-6½.
The action continues tomorrow with a Polo Beginners’ Challenge at 3pm, followed by two more international matches to decide Sunday’s finalists.
