John Paul Clarkin, who was part of Adrian Kirby’s 1870 side, broke his collarbone in a practice game yesterday, putting him on the sidelines for the duration of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, which got underway yesterday.

The eight-goal New Zealander will be replaced by Polito Pieres, also eight-goals. Making up the remainder of the 1870 side is Rob Archibald and Ruki Baillieu.

Today, 1870 will play their first game in the tournament, facing Salkeld at 2pm.

In yesterday’s games Enigma, Dubai and El Remanso bagged wins. Jerome Wirth’s Enigma side, who were runners up in this year’s Queen’s Cup, defeated Paul Oberschneider’s La Golondrina 13-7 in the opening game.

Last year’s winners Dubai, played Emlor at 3pm, with Rashid Albwardy’s team claiming victory, 11-8.

George and Charlie Hanbury’s El Remanso then played Alfio Marchini’s Loro Piana in a closely fought game. El Remanso won by one goal, 11-10.

As well as the 1870-Salkeld game, Zacara will play Stella Artois at 4pm today.
