Copa Julio Novillo Astrada

Success for Monterosso

Monterosso defeated Milagro, 11-10, in The Copa Julio Novillo Astrada Final on Thursday 10 November at La Aguada Polo Club. The clash between Monterosso and El Milagro was a very hard fought contest, but Alessandro Bazzoni's lineup got off to a better start, closing the first chukka with a 4-2 lead. However, by half-time, El Milagro were able to tie at 5-5. A remarkable fourth chukka followed – El Milagro produced three consecutive goals, courtesy of Santiago Solari (2) and a penalty conversion by Benjamin Panelo, to claim an 8-5 advantage, but Monterosso bounced back and closed the gap to just one goal through Cubi Toccalino and Antonio Heguy. El Milagro replied quickly to re-take their two goal lead, until Guillermo Caset converted a 60 yard penalty. At the end of a thrilling fourth chukka, Monterosso was one goal behind (8-9). Guillermo Caset and Antonio Heguy scored in the fifth chukka to put Monterosso 10-9 up, but at the start of the sixth chukka, it was Tomás Panelo who tied at 10-all. At the end of the day, and with only a minute left in regulation time, Guillermo Caset produced a spectacular goal to secure Monterosso the 11-10 win and the title.
Principio Polenta, played by Panelo, was the Premio River Slaney Best Playing Pony, Jazz Iluminada, played by Caset, was the Best Polo Argentino Bred, Bazzoni received the Best Mounted Player Award and Heguy was presented with the Skeeter Johnston Fair Play Award.
