Sad news

Deaths of well-known polo personalities

Recently the polo world was saddened to hear of the death of David Rollinson aged 90 years on 23 May. A long-standing member of the Cheshire Polo Club, he reached a 3 goal handicap and counted victories in the Cowdray Park Challenge Cup and the Royal Windsor as his greatest polo achievements.

He carried on playing competitively well into his late sixties and along with his second wife Sheryl, he managed the Club until recently.

On Friday 12 June, we were all shocked by the sudden passing of Jeff Thomas, the owner of Tally Ho Farms, leading polo supplier and Equipment Sponsor of the England team. A minute's silence was observed at the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo prior to the Gigaset England Match on Saturday June 13. A similar mark of respect was also held at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club where Jeff has been a regular sponsor and friend for many years.

We have also just received the sad news that Diana Scott has passed away. Diana was a devoted mother to her sons Simon, Mark & Jeremy and wife to the late Major Ronnie Scott. A stalwart supporter of polo, Diana would always be seen at Cirencester – both watching polo and supporting Ronnie for the 25 years that he was Polo Manager at Cirencester Park Polo Club, 1972-1997. A minute’s silence was also observed at Cirencester Park Polo Club on Sunday 14 June prior to the start of the Humphrey Guinness Plate Final.

Our most sincere and heartfelt condolences are extended to their families. Obituaries for all of these well known and well loved polo people will be published in the July issue of Polo Times. Anybody with any anecdotes or fond memories that they would like to share with our readers are asked to submit a letter by clicking here
