Picture perfect Polo in the Park

Hong Kong victorious in sunny weekend tournament

Friday was an historic milestone at Hurlingham Park as a Cutler and Gross Team England faced AirEuropa Team South America in the first International polo match hosted as this historic venue since 1939. The current England captain, James Beim, led an 18 goal side but unfortunately were unable to secure victory with the visitors claiming a 6-4 victory.

The weekend saw exciting matches played at 12 goal level at Hurlingham Park which left huge crowds wanting more as they watched Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Team Hong Kong beat Powder Byrne Team Dublin 10-8 in the Final of the Chestertons Polo in the Park. The two teams had already met in the opening match of the tournament, and in their second fixture both pulled out all the stops to exhibit some amazing play. Early in the match, Dublin appeared to have the upper hand with Sebastian Dawnay converting an early penalty, leading 4-2 after the opening chukka. Patrick Ephson then came into his own, singlehandedly upping the score to 7-2 in favour of Dublin. However, Hong Kong refused to admit defeat and backed up by Jamie Morrison, Max Charlton scored a spectacular goal, worth two points under the rules of Polo in the Park. Unstoppable, Hong Kong surged on, upping their score to 9-7 over Dublin, with another 2-point goal from Charlton. Richard, the Earl of Tyrone, rallied for Dublin, but couldn't claw back the game, which ended in a resounding victory for Hong Kong, 10-8, and their first Chestertons Polo in the Park title.

The runner-up Final saw City A.M. Team Abu Dhabi beat Argentex Davos 8-5, while earlier in the Subsidiary Final Mint Team London drew against Shoreline Lagos 5-5.

The tournament saw a sold-out Ladies Day this year as celebrities and spectators alike packed out the stands in their finest attire.
