Lechuza and Dubai make it through to Gold Cup final

Two hot favourites from the 20 teams in the Gold Cup at Cowdray Park have made it through to Sunday’s finals. In yesterday’s semi-finals (15 July) on Lawns I, Lechuza Caracas and Dubai booked their places, with wins, respectively, over Enigma and El Remanso.

The early stages of the excellent and close midday game belonged to British-dominated Enigma: after chukka one it was 3-0. Malcolm Borwick in particular – the tournament’s highest scorer – was on great form, putting in the goal of the match, a high hit from 80 yards out, in the second, which ended 4-3. Then, as in some previous games, Lechuza started to pick up. Max Routledge, riding his grey Rossi, scored a fantastic galloping goal to equalise before half-time, and from then on Enigma were playing catch-up.

Though chances for the black shirts came thick and fast in the second half, they failed to capitalise and Lechuza won 10-8. Central to the win was great team-work, with stylish interplay between Miguel Novillo Astrada, Guillermo ‘Sapo’ Caset and Max Routledge, plus the unswerving concentration of Venezuelan patron Victor Vargas, a solid hitter who grabbed opportunities to score, contributing two good goals.

The sun came out and the stands filled to bursting for the 4pm game between Dubai and El Remanso, but what looked a promising contest on paper turned into a disappointingly fragmented game, with plenty of whistle.

El Remanso, with the young British Hanbury brothers as patrons, plus Chilean Jaime Huidobro and Uruguayan David Stirling, edged ahead early on as Dubai took a couple of chukkas to find their stride. At half time it was 4-3 to Dubai, and their lead increased in the second half. However, until the sixth and final chukka, the speedy passing play between Adolfo Cambiaso and Pablo MacDonough seen in June’s Queen’s Cup final barely surfaced. Final score: 10-6 to Dubai.

Sunday’s final is at 3pm; gates open in the morning. After the 3pm final Young England (Jack Richardson, Max Charlton, Lanto Sheridan and Eden Ormerod) will play Young New Zealand (Mark Henderson, Angus McKelvie, Glen Sheriff and Charlie Wood).
