La Dolfina Scone Win Cowdray Gold Cup

History made as Adolfo & Mia Cambiaso become first father & daughter to win the prestigious title together

History was made yesterday, as Adolfo and Mia Cambiaso became the first father and daughter to win The British Open Polo Championship for The Cowdray Gold Cup. In 2020 Adolfo lifted The Cowdray Gold Cup with his son, Poroto, and five years later he lifted the same trophy with his daughter Mia. The fact that yesterday’s win was his ninth Cowdray Gold Cup title (which makes him the Argentinian player with the most number of Gold Cup titles, with his first win in 1991 with Tramontana) was just another statistic on the day. For Mia Cambiaso, she made history as the first Argentinian woman to lift the trophy and also scooped up both the Most Valuable Player prize as well as the Best Playing Pony rug for DS Altamira. For a man who has had more success than any other polo player and been at the top of his game for over 30 years, he is a living legend and his legacy will stretch on for years to come through his talented children.

The British Open Polo Championship for The Cowdray Gold Cup Final between La Dolfina Scone and Kazak was highly anticipated, played in front of packed grandstands and sidelines at Cowdray Park Polo Club. La Dolfina Scone took the lead from the first chukka, while Kazak struggled to settle into their usual rhythm of long shots and flowing play. Open, end to end polo in the second chukka, saw Kazak start to close the gap, with their players calm under pressure on a warm but dry day. Kazak needed to continue to stretch the play and score, but La Dolfina Scone relentlessly applied the pressure and extended the lead to 5-3 going into half-time.
La Dolfina Scone’s Hugo Taylor opened the second half by scooping up the ball from the throw-in and making it 6-3, while Kazak were held scoreless in the fourth chukka although not through lack of effort; the four goal deficit (7-3) going into the fifth chukka was an intimidating proposition.
The fifth chukka saw the first of the injuries for La Dolfina Scone, as Taylor took an errant ball to the face, but luckily was able to resume playing. Kazak found their form and began to find the goalposts once more with a lovey run to goal from Nico Pieres followed by an unmarked Fran Elizalde taking full advantage, 7-5. Taylor bounced back from injury with a goal of his own, swiftly followed by a break to goal by Pieres on a rapid pony to bring them back into contention, 8-6.
Kazak needed the sixth chukka to continue in the same vein, but a penalty in favour of La Dolfina Scone extended the lead to 9-6. Kazak replied with their own penalty conversion 9-7 with just four minutes of the match left. As tensions mounted on the field, the whistle found its voice but no one could anticipate what happened next. An accidental clash between Adolfo Cambiaso and Pieres saw them both tumble to the ground and although Pieres was able to remount, Cambiaso injured his right hand (it has now been confirmed he had broken three fingers on his right hand in the fall) and had to be replaced by Tomás Panelo. When play resumed with a penalty in favour of Kazak, with Panelo receiving a yellow card on behalf of Cambiaso which meant he didn’t manage to touch the ball, Elizalde had no difficulty in converting to close the gap to just one goal, 9-8, but they simply ran out of time to recoup their earlier losses.
Adolfo is due to play The Argentine Triple Crown with La Natividad La Dolfina alongside his son Poroto and his nephews Barto and Jeta Castagnola, so all eyes will be on his recovery to see if he can add The Argentine Open to an already incredible year.
