La Dolfina as strong as ever

Team defeated Ellerstina Piaget to win Hurlingham Open

La Dolfina maintained their winning streak with their 20th consecutive victory coming in the form of Saturday’s Hurlingham Open Final. Adolfo Cambiaso, Pelon Stirling, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Martin Nero beat Ellerstina Piaget 18-15 to secure their third title of the season, their previous 2014 victories including The Jockey Club Open and The Tortugas Open. The match had been postponed by a week as a result of the heavy rainfall in Argentina and consequently had left both teams with very little opportunity to play any practices – a factor however that did not seem to have any effect of La Dolfina’s performance.
The first chukka saw La Dolfina dominate 5 goals to 1, with Cambiaso and co increasing their lead to 8-3 in the second, meaning after just two chukkas of play, Ellerstina had left themselves with a lot of work to do. As the match progressed chukka by chukka, it became more obvious that defending champions La Dolfina would be the team lifting the trophy. However, that is not to say that Ellerstina Piaget didn’t have their own moments of excellence. Throughout the second half, Ellerstina created many more problems for their opposition, producing a performance that illustrated they could become a real threat if they played it right the next time.
La Dolfina’s Juan Martin Nero was presented with the Most Valuable Player prize and Javier Novillo Astrada Fair Play Award while Adolfo Cambiaso’s 11 goals led to him recieving the Top Scorer prize. However, when it came to horse power, it was Ellerstina’s Open Chequera, ridden by Facundo Pieres, who won both the Argentine Polo Association Best Playing Pony and Best Playing Pony Breeders Award.
This Final was the 13th time that these two teams had come against each other in pursuit of an Open title – a great achievement and a huge credit to both organisations. With Palermo set to kick off this Saturday (15 November), these two sides will already be focused on their next title. A win for La Dolfina in The Open would secure them with a consecutive Triple Crown Title – an achievement that has only been achieved once before, by Colonel Suarez in 1974-1975.
