US Open Polo Championship Semi Finals

Flexjet and US Polo Association ride through

Following a weekend of action at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, the final spots in the US Open Polo Championship Semi Finals were decided. Flexjet and US Polo Association will be joining Valiente and Daily Racing Form in the next round, battling it out for the US Open title.

Melissa Ganzi’s Flexjet were the first to take to the field yesterday, Sunday 15 April, up against her husband, Marc Ganzi’s Audi. For the first three chukkas, Audi led the scoreboard, leading 6-3 as the teams broke for half-time. But, with extreme effort, Melissa Ganzi’s side turned the tables in the fourth chukka with an 8-7 lead for Flexjet, followed in the fifth chukka by an epic four goal run for Melissa Ganzi’s side, widening the gap to 12-8. Audi once again caught up in the sixth chukka, forcing Flexjet into a 12-12 score at what would usually have been the end of the match. And so, as the teams went into an extra, seventh chukka, it was all to play for. With a final goal for Flexjet, Audi’s hopes of a US Open Polo Championship Final sank and Melissa Ganzi’s team won 13-12.
The third Ganzi to take to the field, Grant Ganzi, and his team US Polo Association had a similar run later on in the afternoon. Their match against Rob Jornayvaz’s Colorado saw US Polo Association lead from the first chukka, but Colorado were never far behind. At half-time, Ganzi’s side still led 5-2, but going into the fifth chukka, Colorado had evened the scoreboard, 6-6, and with only one chukka to go, the competition was close. Both teams fought valiantly in the final chukka, scoring two goals apiece very quickly. But, as the clock wound down to the final bell, US Polo Association secured their US Open Semi Final spot with a ninth goal to take the match 9-8.
The US Open Polo Championship Semi Finals will take place on Wednesday 18 April from 12pm, with the Final scheduled for Sunday 22 April at 3pm (local time). For more information, please visit the USPA website here.
