La Dolfina Brava Win the First Women’s Argentine Open

Clarkin, Cambiaso and the Araujos are a winning combination

Earlier on in the day on Saturday 2 December, the grand Final of the First Women’s Argentine Open took place on Ground two of the historic Palermo grounds, Buenos Aires.

Two unbeaten teams, La Dolfina Brava and Ellerstina took to the field to battle it out for the coveted trophy. The first chukka was tangled, locked and very fraught, with both teams scoring two goals apiece. As the second chukka got underway, La Dolfina Brava gradually took control of the field, denying Ellerstina any opportunities on goal, but the chukka ended goalless. It wasn’t until the third chukka that Milagros Fernández Araujo finally managed to find the posts multiple times, with only one in response from Ellerstina, to put La Dolfina Brava in the lead 4-3. As play continued, so did La Dolfina’s lead, 6-3. As the fourth chukka commenced, Lía Salvo scored three goals in a row to even the scoreboard, but La Dolfina could not respond before the bell, thus putting the match into an extra chukka.
After two missed chances by the Fernández Araujo sisters, Nina Clarkin took advantage of an Ellerstina mistake, scoring a 30 yard penalty with ease and with it claiming the 2017 Women’s Argentine Open title with a final 7-6 score.
La Dolfina Brava’s Candelaria Fernández Araujo was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award, whilst the Best Playing Pony rug was presented to Dolfina Clone 03 Lapa, owned by the Cambiaso family and played by Nina Clarkin.
She told Polo Times after the match, “The match was amazing, we started really well and strong, and my girls played fantastically. I think the pressure towards the end got a bit much and Ellerstina came out fighting in the last chukka and scored some great goals and really put us under some pressure. Luckily we managed to pull it back and get that golden goal in extra time so we were thrilled to get it done. “This tournament for ladies’ polo is a huge step forward. For us to be able to play on such a big stage and in that area on the same day as the men’s Final was amazing and I hope it inspires other girls to pull their boots on and get going so they can come out here and have a go. I think I’m still in a bit of a daze after it, it was just such a dream.”
