Mon 27th Nov 2017124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship UpdateNews from Palermo
On Sunday 26 November, the Hurlingham Open winners, Ellerstina Johor, beat Alegría Land Rover 15-14 to secure their coveted spot in the 124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship Final. After two chukkas with the scores resting evenly, Ellerstina’s Facundo and Polito Pieres used their expertly honed skills to make space and convert chances into goals. The sixth chukka was the best period seen yet in the tournament with a whopping eight goals scored and both teams on the attack. Spectators were on the edge of their seats as the match entered the final chukka and Alegría took the lead, but Ellerstina were not done yet, taking the coveted spot in Saturday’s Final. This will be their fourth Final in a row, having lost out to rivals La Dolfina Sancor Seguros in each of their attempts. The reigning champions, La Dolfina Sancor Seguros, beat Cría Yatay 11-10 on Ground 2, in a close fought match, which ended in an extra chukka. It was an extremely even game from the word go, with both teams finding the posts multiple times. As the fifth chukka began, the score was in Cría Yatay’s favour 10-8, but during the final two chukkas Diego Cavanagh fought valiantly to even the scoreboard before the last bell. Cavanagh secured La Dolfina’s spot in the Final with a 60 yard penalty, thus ending Cría Yatay Argentine Open journey. La Dolfina Sancor Seguros and Ellerstina Johor will meet on Saturday 2 December following the women’s Final, in the greatest polo match of the year. Ellerstina Johor are currently leading the rankings with 1,350 points to La Dolfina’s 1,050, but will their fifth attempt be the one that breaks the La Dolfina camel’s back?
