Mon 17th Jul 2017All Change For Gold CupHanbury vs Hanbury, Pieres & Pieres vs Pieres
In a tale of fraternal tussles, The Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup Semi Finals are now set to be matches of brother against brother. George and Charlie Hanbury will play each other in the first of the two Semi Finals, El Remanso vs Sommelier, whilst brothers Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres will play against their other brother Nico in the second match, King Power vs Habtoor. On Saturday 15 July, Sommelier shocked spectators by beating Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup favourites La Indiana who were playing without Agustín Merlos, 15-12. Sommelier’s set plays held them in great advantage, winning the majority of throw-ins against Michael Bickford’s La Indiana team. Juan Gris Zavaleta’s attempts on goal kept Sommelier in the lead even after a final attempt by Luke Tomlinson in the dying moments. El Remanso booked their place in the Semi Finals, beating Monterosso Polo Team 12-9 in an impressive performance for the all-Brit team. Despite considerably less possession than their black and white opponents, El Remanso’s impenetrable team defence was able to contain Monterosso Polo Team’s attacks. El Remanso scored six out of the first seven goals, three of which came off the stick of James Harper. Monterosso Polo Team were unable to claw back up the scoreboard in the second half, whilst El Remanso’s Ollie Cudmore and James Harper scored a futher two goals apiece, securing their spot in the Wednesday Semi Final against Sommelier, which will see brothers Charlie and George Hanbury compete against each other for a spot in the Final. In the third Quarter Final of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup, high goal stalwarts and Cartier Queen’s Cup champions, RH Polo, said goodbye to their hopes for golden glory. With Adolfo Cambiaso on the sidelines after an injury in their last match, Ben Soleimani’s new line-up, including 10 goal Hilario Ulloa at back, couldn’t overcome Francisco Elizalde’s perfect six for six goal scoring and continuous attacking position, losing out 10-12 to the Gold Cup first timers, Habtoor. On the same day, King Power took on Talandracas in a closely fought game ultimately winning 10-6. In the first half, the teams looked fairly even, but as the teams came out for the fourth chukka, King Power turned on the gas and dominated Edouard Carmignac’s team for the rest of the match. Facundo Pieres had an impressive fifth chukka converting his three attempts on goal, and dominating ball possession throughout. Talandracas were unable to fight back and Facundo Pieres’ sixth goal of the game sealed the victory for King Power and a place in the Semi Final against Habtoor. This Semi Final will be another family affair with Nico Pieres facing his brothers, Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres for a place in the Final. The Semi Finals will take place on Wednesday 19 July, whilst the Final will be on Sunday 23 July at 3pm.
