Jaeger LeCoultre Trippetts Series

Play gets under way in the 22 Goal

In the first weekend of the 22 goal Jaeger-LeCoultre Trippetts Challenge at Cowdray Park Polo Club, teams battled it out to secure their spot in the next stage.

Game 1 - La Indiana vs Talandracas
La Indiana returned to this year’s tournament with three of last year’s four players and adding a solid Back in English internationalist L. Tomlinson, they had been on everyone’s radar since the beginning of the season.
Talandracas had suffered a tournament-opening 12-9 loss to El Remanso and desperately needed a win to stay in the tournament.
In a tightly played opening chukka both defences were on top form and goals were scarce.  G. Caset scored the first and only goal of the period as Talandracas took a 1-0 lead.
G. Caset made it 2-0 in the second before American 8-goaler N. Roldan converted a 40-yard penalty shot, 2-1.  Consecutive goals from G. Caset ended the period with Talandracas in control of a 4-1 game. G. Caset added two more goals in the third and ended the first half 6-2.
J. Hyde’s first goal of the day extended the Talandracas lead to five goals, 7-2, as the fourth chukka got underway, when the La Indiana attack awoke.  Consecutive goals from A. Merlos, N. Roldan, M. Bickford and L. Tomlinson had La Indiana within a goal of the lead, 7-6.  N. Roldan’s second goal of the chukka and fourth of the day levelled the score at 7-7, and had the Talandracas team rattled. The Talandracas defence stepped up and shut down the La Indiana rally while G. Caset added two more goals for a 9-7 advantage with one chukka left in play.
G. Caset’s ninth goal of the afternoon came on a 30-yard penalty conversion and stretched the Talandracas lead to three goals, 10-7, and that was when Merlos came to life.  The former 10-goaler took control of the game.  A. Merlos scored four consecutive goals while his teammates held Talandracas scoreless for the balance of the game!  La Indiana celebrated with an 11-10 win.

Game 2 - Murus Sanctus vs Sommelier
Murus Sanctus quickly took control of Saturday’s only Jaeger-LeCoultre Trippetts Challenge match, on their way to a 9-7 win against Sommelier on Field 1.  Altered lineups had M. Podesca replacing D. Van Reenen for Murus Sanctus while G. Laulhe took the place of Sommelier’s J. Gris Zavaleta.
First chukka goals from 10-goaler H. Ulloa and M. Podesca were complimented by shutout defence, with Sommelier falling behind, 2-1, in spite of receiving a one goal handicap from the 22-goal Murus Sanctus team.
G. Hanbury tied the game at 2-2 as the Sommelier team, but Murus Sanctus fought back.  F. Sola scored back-to-back goals to close out the chukka with Murus Sanctus on top of a 4-2 lead.
Canadian 8-goaler F. Mannix came alive in the third, scoring the first two goals to level the score at 4-4.  Murus Sanctus team captain C. Ricard took the lead back, 5-4, with her first goal of the day, but F. Mannix was in a groove.  A final goal from F. Mannix had the score tied at five goals apiece, 5-5, to end the first half of play.
Single goals from F. Sola and M. Podesca went unanswered as the Murus Sanctus defence kept Sommelier off of the scoreboard.  After four chukkas of play, Murus Sanctus held a two-goal lead over Sommelier, 7-5.
M. Podesca scored the first goal of the fifth chukka as Murus Sanctus enjoyed their first three-goal lead of the game, 8-5.  F. Mannix scored the only other goal of the fifth period with Murus Sanctus riding off of the field on top of an 8-6 score.
F. Mannix cut the Murus Sanctus lead back to a single goal, 8-7, with his fifth score of the game, but it wasn’t enough.  Sola scored the final goal of the match with Murus Sanctus celebrating the 9-7 win.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Trippetts Challenge matches are scheduled to be played on both Wednesday and Thursday this week, with the final scheduled to be played on Sunday, 21 May.

Game 3 - King Power Foxes vs La Bamba de Areco
King Power Foxes managed to edge a troublesome La Bamba de Areco foursome 9-8, after trailing for much of the game.
With N. Hine substituting for La Bamba de Areco team captain J F. Decaux, the King Power Foxes found themselves trailing 3-0 in the first chukka.  Magoo Laprida scored the first goal of the contest followed by a pair of goals from Ro. Rueda.
The King Power Foxes displayed a solid defensive effort of their own in the second chukka, but were unable to unleash a powerful attack. A single goal from G. Pieres was the only score in the chukka, with La Bamba de Areco riding off the field after two chukkas with a 3-1 advantage.
La Bamba de Areco got back to work in the third chukka.  Single goals from C. Laprida and R. Rueda had La Bamba de Areco in front by four goals, 5-1.  A. Srivaddhanaprabha closed out the scoring with his first goal of the day, but it was La Bamba de Areco with the 5-2 halftime lead.
The King Power Foxes ratcheted up their efforts in the fourth chukka, with opening goals from G. Pieres and F. Pieres that brought them to within a goal of the lead. D. Cavanagh and A. Srivaddhanaprabha traded goals to end the chukka with La Bamba de Areco remaining in possession of the lead, 6-5.
A 60-yard penalty conversion in the fifth chukka from F. Pieres tied the game at 7-7, and A.Srivaddhanaprabha’s second goal of the match had them in front for the first time all day, 7-6.
D. Cavanagh scored the first goal of the sixth chukka tying the game at 7-7.  G. Pieres scored for the third time and pushed the King Power Foxes back on top, 8-7.  Another D.Cavanagh goal levelled the score, again, at 8-8 as both teams fought valiantly in the waning minutes of play. F.Pieres scored the final goal of the match for the 9-8 win while La Bamba de Areco let the game slip away from them after leading for five chukkas.

Play continues in the 2017 Jaeger-LeCoultre Trippetts Challenge on Wednesday, 17 May with a 4:30pm game between El Remanso and La Indiana.
