First Day of Play in Azerbaijan

CBC Sport Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan 2016

Today saw the first day of action as teams from Azerbaijan, Switzerland, Spain and Argentina competed for the CBS Sport Arena Polo World Cup.

The first match was played between home side Gilan Holding (Azerbaijan) and Italdizian Group (Argentina). By the middle of the second chukka, Italdizian group were struggling and were yet to score. However after a slow start they began to understand how the surface and ball were playing, which resulted in a thrilling game. Both teams really gave it their all in front of a strong local crowd however it was favourites, Gilan Holding, who managed to score two goals in quick succession in the final minutes of the final chukka to win the match 9-7½.
Badrutt’s Palace (St Moritz) featuring German star, Patrick Maleitze and Bogner (Spain) was a similarly exciting match of end to end polo. Despite some brilliant individual goals from Badrutt’s Palace, it was the well drilled Bogner team who won the game, 11-9, following some excellent team play. A particular highlight was Richard Fagan’s lightning quick goal at the beginning of the first chukka, where he took the ball from the line-out and swiftly despatched the ball through the Badrutt’s Palace posts.
Tomorrow, Badrutt’s Palace will take on Italdizian Group (Argentina) in the first game. The second game will be played between Gilan Holding (Azerbaijan) and Bogner (Spain).
