Tue 30th Aug 2016Dubai win Sotogrande Gold Cup for Second Year RunningCambiaso and Albwardy champions once again
Led by Rashid, the Albwardy’s Dubai team remain as one of the most competitive and consistent teams on the high goal circuit. Following their victory in the Cartier Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club back in June, the green and white shirts have now added another 2016 success to the board; a second consecutive Cartier Gold Cup win. The Dubai team (Rashid Albwardy, Santiago Stirling, Alejo Taranco and Adolfo Cambiaso) defeated Inigo Zobel’s Ayala Polo Team (Tom Brodie, Nicolas Pieres and Facundo Pieres) by 12 goals to seven. Although the final score may suggest Dubai had an easy ride, the score was in fact level until the fifth chukka – it was only in the final ten minutes of the game that Dubai were able to take control. The Final featured fast-paced polo with both teams working hard together in order to try and gain any advantage over their opposition and for the majority of the match it was impossible to call who would end up victorious. However, Dubai’s performance in the last two chukkas of the game enabled them to create, and then increase their lead. However, it was not all easy. With just three minutes to go their main man Adolfo Cambiaso suffered a nasty collision with Ayala’s Tom Brodie which resulted in him having to call on a substitute. Juan Martin Nero, Cambiaso’s La Dolfina teammate, was the man to take his place and luckily for Dubai they were able to hold on to their already established lead until the final whistle was blown. Despite the fact that he had to leave the field before the end of the match, Cambiaso was still the top scorer in the final, scoring a total of nine goals and although Ayala were a great rival they were unable to overcome the strong Dubai team on this occasion. Adolfo Cambiaso’s Dolfina Primicia was awarded the Best Playing pony prizes and Cambiaso was also presented with the Most Valuable Player prize. In the Subsidiary Final, which took place before the main Final, Lechuza Caracas defeated Dos Lunas A&G Banca Privada 10-8. The low goal Gold Cup saw Lechuza John Smith become champions, defeating Darko Horvat’s Foxcote by seven goals to five in the Final at Santa María Polo Club’s Puente de Hierro fields to win the Isolas 1892 Gold Cup. Lechuza John Smith’s Pelayo Berazadi was top scorer, with five goals, and was named MVP of the final. Shakib Polo Sotovila then claimed the Subsidiary Final after beating Valdeparras 13-7. In the medium goal HRH Princess Azemah’s Brunei have claimed the Gold Cup title, beating Golden Goose Deluxe Brand 11-8. Earlier on in the season HRH Princess Azemah’s side additionally lifted the medium goal Silver Cup, defeating Seven Sevens 12 goals to eight in the Final. Photograph: The winning Dubai team.
