Cowdray Vikings Conquer Cowdray

Home Team Storm to Victory in the British Ladies’ Championships

As the polo world geared up for the biggest Final of the UK high goal season on the Sunday, Saturday 16 July saw the culmination of the exciting City & Country Ladies Championships on Ground 1 of Ambersham at Cowdray Park Polo Club. Winners of League A Cowdray Vikings took on the leaders of League B Huntington House/Apes Hill in a thrilling four chukka bonanza of ladies' polo at its best. With some of the biggest names in women's polo face to face, the match got off to a tightly contested start, but slowly opened up giving all the players the chance to show off their skills. Huntington House/ Apes Hill started with a half goal advantage, which they increased early with a flying goal. The pressure was on, but Cowdray Vikings quickly replied with a goal from Katie Vickery to bring the score up to almost level. Another goal from each team showed just how evenly matched the two teams were in the first two chukkas, Cowdray Vikings' big guns Sarah Wiseman and Hazel Jackson being effectively closed down by Emma Boers and Tamara Fox.

The half-time chat for Cowdray Vikings seemed to restore their equilibrium and changing their tactics they started to open up the game, playing the long shots down to Lila Pearson at the front and reaping the rewards with a run of goals. Huntington House/ Apes Hill were not giving up though, continuing to put pressure on the girls in orange, but it wasn't enough to shake the cool headed Wiseman who controlled the game from the back, working beautifully with the powerful game maker and Most Valuable Player Hazel Jackson. By the start of the fourth and final chukka, Cowdray Vikings had found their stride and were able to breath a little easier against the tough side so a couple of missed goals in the last was no real drama, however an incredible back hand tail shot from Sarah Wiseman which whizzed through the posts didn't go amiss and the match ended 6-2½ in favour of the Cowdray Vikings, who raised the impressive trophy high and walked away with some gorgeous Aspinal handbags.
