Wed 29th Jun 2016Going for Gold Day 6 & 7Shock Defeat of Valiente by La Indiana Day six saw Michael Bickford’s La Indiana defeated Valiente on Monday 27 June. The well-supported Cartier Queen’s Cup finalist side gave an impressive performance in their second match of the 2016 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup. Nic Roldan scored the opening goal for La Indiana, answered by a goal from Juan Martin Nero for Valiente as the first chukka ended with a low scoring tie of one all. La Indiana surged ahead in the second and third chukkas whilst Valiente struggled, having already missed three penalty shots and failing to score a single field goal. The first half closed with La Indiana leading 6-1, a comfortable lead if you aren’t playing against the world’s number one. Agustin ‘Tincho’ Merlos opened the second half with a seventh goal, before Cambaiso managed a penalty to make 7-2. The chukka closed with Lusarreta scoring to maintain a 6 goal lead. The Most Valuable Cartier Queen’s Cup Player, Lusarreta continued his scoring streak, impressing the spectators with a cheeky backhand to take the score to 9-2. In the final chukka Valiente scored the most goals in the whole match, but two goals didn’t even get them close to winning, as Roldan nailed a tenth goal though the posts to end the game 10-4. The seventh day of the tournament was another nail-biting extravaganza with title holders, King Power Foxes defeating Zacara in extra time on Tuesday 28 June. In a tough, all-action encounter Zacara were two goals ahead at the end of the second chukka but the score levelled out to 5-5 by half-time. The fourth chukka was a similar story ending 6-6. A tense fifth chukka started with a swift goal from Facundo Pieres, his next attempt went wide giving Monteverde the chance for a run to the other end to equalise on 7-7. To take the lead with a score of eight goals to seven, Facundo Pieres scored a 60 yard penalty shot, whilst the stand-off on the scores continued in the sixth chukka. In the middle of a melée, MacDonough somehow managed to find a gap to hit a massive hit to goal, luckily the ball carried on rolling and went over the line. The score remained 8-8 at the end of the chukka which pushed the game into a seventh period of play. It was all over pretty quickly in the seventh chukka as the Pieres brothers worked their magic. Gonzalito wasted no time and whizzed an amazing long shot between the goalposts to make the golden goal, which stole the match for King Power Foxes with a score of 9-8 and roars of approval from the King Power support team.
