Fri 24th Jun 2016Going for Gold Day 3Wins for La Indiana and King Power in The Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup
The third round of matches took place on Thursday 23 June with tussles between La Indiana and Britannia El Remanso, before King Power Foxes triumphed over La Bamba de Areco. While King Power Foxes’ win over La Bamba de Areco was an easy result, the match between Cartier Queen’s Cup finalists, La Indiana and the all England pro team of Britannia El Remanso, was a hard-fought and scrappy affair which saw the score tie five times. Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the early going as they took turns trying to develop an effective attack. The lead switched between the two teams throughout and neither foursome were able to get a solid enough score difference to breathe easily. The first half ended in a 5-5 tie that had everyone wondering which way the victory would fall. An incredible second half from Julian de Lusarreta ensured that spectators were left in little doubt as to which team had stronger offensive tactics. Consecutive goals from The Queen’s Cup Most Valuable Player ended the game 13-10 in La Indiana’s favour. Despite being handicapped by a rain delay and a heavy field, King Power Foxes took their first step in defending their 2015 British Open Championship by beating La Bamba de Areco 11-7. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the opening chukka before King Power flexed their muscles to build up a 6-3 halftime lead. A determined La Bamba de Areco team stormed back onto the field for the second half, with goals from Cavanagh (60 yard penalty conversion) and Laprida slashing the King Power lead to a single goal, 6-5. Although La Bamba de Areco pressured King Power throughout the game, they seemed to run out of gas in the final minutes of play, which allowed Facundo Pieres to score the first goal of the final chukka, giving King Power a three goal, 10-7 edge with time running out. Gonzalito Pieres scored the final goal of the game on a brilliantly executed 300+ yard run for the 11-7 final score. All teams except Murus Sanctus have now shaken off the dust, played their first matches and tested themselves against the others. Play continues on Saturday 25 June, with RH Polo against Clarke & Green and Apes Hill vs Talandracas.
