Heroes at Heroes Day

Tidworth Polo Club Hosts a Fantastic Day of Polo for a Great Cause

A fantastic day’s polo on Sunday 29 May saw three varied and exciting matches take place on the magnificent looking Fisher Ground at Tidworth Polo Club for the Heroes Day.

The Royal Navy took on the Royal Air Force in match number one where the RAF tactically tried to drop bombs on the Navy, whilst the Navy torpedoed them back. The Royal Navy quickly romped ahead with Commodore Adrian Aplin and Lieutenant Commander Steve Spiller creating some wonderful plays. The rival teams battled over the four chukkas before the Royal Navy came out victorious with 6 goals to 2.

Next up was the highlight of the day and the reason that so many spectators had gathered on the sun drenched banks of Tidworth Polo Club. The Heroes Cup saw injured servicemen and women compete alongside current members of the Army Squad for the biggest prize in Para Polo in an immense display of grit and determination from The Help for Heroes players. The two chukka match was closely fought with the Independent Living Solutions team victorious 2-1 against Wilsons Solicitors. An outstanding show of courage from both sides showed a great level of polo from players who are an inspiration to all.

The highest handicapped game of the afternoon saw the Hackett Army team against the girls from Women in Polo (Lolly Stanhope-White, who also received the Most Valuable Player Award, Tamara Fox, Rosie Ross and Heloise Wilson-Smith). Both level on paper at 6 goals, the fast and furious polo had the crowds on the edge of their seats. By the end of the third chukka, it was getting as tense off the pitch as it was on it. The Hackett Army team went in for some tactical manoeuvres, however it was the Women in Polo Team who deservingly won the day, showing what the girls are made of with a last second goal, which saw them victorious 6-5.
