Cartier Queen’s Cup Day Four and Five

Wins for HB Polo, Valiente Dubai, Zacara and King Power Foxes

The Pailloncy brothers’ HB Polo team won their second game in the league rounds against Apes Hill on Saturday 21 May at Coworth Park. The scores were neck and neck for the first three chukkas finishing the first half with a score of 4-4. By the fifth chukka the story was much the same with the scores at 7-7. The final chukka swung in favour of HB Polo, who managed to score just one more goal than their opponents, giving them the match.

In the second game on Saturday Valiente Dubai received the Royal Windsor Horse Show Cup from Colonel Stuart Cowen after their win against RH Polo at Guards Polo Club. The game was wet and spattered with whistles. Rodrigo Andrade, Guillermo Terrera and Martin Valent all had falls, but managed to continue the game. It did look as if Valiente Dubai, with Ralph Richardson substituting for Rob Jornayvaz, were going to overwhelm Ben Soleimani’s RH Polo, leading 7-2 at the end of the second chukka. However, RH Polo came out strongly in the third. Andrade and Nico Pieres closed the gap and Valiente Dubai failed to score. The second half was more productive for RH Polo as they managed a few more goals and penalties, but none of their efforts were enough and Valiente Dubai took the trophy with a final score of 11-10.

On Sunday 22 May Zacara won against Sifani at their home grounds with a convincing score of 13-8. Luke Tomlinson tried hard to keep Sifani, who received one goal on handicap, in the game, scoring five of his side’s nine goals, but the former England Captain was no match for the 10 goaler Pablo MacDonough. He was responsible for eight of his side’s goals and is continuing to make sure that Zacara are definitely a team to be feared as this tournament heats up.

Later that afternoon at Guards Polo Club King Power Foxes walked away with their second win of the tournament against Talandracas and the Kerry Packer trophy with a score of 11-9. However the first half of the game was not quite as rosy as the Foxes would have liked. Such was the strength of the Talandracas attack that King Power failed to score at all in the second chukka, giving Edouard Carmignac’s side a 4-2 lead going into the third. They were able to keep their advantage by just one goal by half -time.

Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres, fired through three goals in the fourth, to only one in reply from Talandracas to take the lead for the first time in this match. The Foxes shot through another three goals to win the match 11-9 in the final chukka. Ros Packer presented the trophy to Guy Schwarzenbach, who was again standing in for Foxes’ patron Top Srivaddhanaprabha.
