Water, Water, Everywhere

Argentine Open Matches Pushed Back Due to Rain

Rain day after day and storms night after night have forced the Argentine Association of Polo to postpone the opening matches of this year’s Argentine Open. The grounds have become too waterlogged to allow play this weekend. Not postponing would only jeopardise the fields for later in the tournament. Friday 20 November’s Zone A matches between La Dolfina and Magual at 2pm and Alegria and La Aguada set to take place at 4:30pm have been postponed to Monday 23 November and the Zone B matches scheduled for Saturday 21 November at the same times have been delayed until the following Tuesday 24 November.

The new schedule is as follows:

Monday 23 November – Zone A

2pm – La Dolfina vs Magual

4:30 – Alegria vs La Aguada

Tuesday 24 November – Zone B

2pm – Ellerstina vs Washington

4:30pm – La Aguada Las Monjitas vs Chapaleufú

This may be bad news for fans eagerly awaiting the start of the world’s mot watched polo tournament, but it can only come as a relief to Facundo Pieres who gains an extra three days in recovering from his shoulder injury that he sustained during the Final of the Hurlingham Open. When his horse tripped over the boards at high speed and Facundo was thrown to the ground he suffered a small muscular tear that prevented him from joining his fellow 10 goalers in the 80 goal Match of the Century on Sunday 15 November. After treatment to his injured shoulder and strict rehab and physiotherapy, Facundo has been insistent that he will be fit to play in the opening match against Washington. This delay may be a blessing in disguise for the Ellerstina front man who will need as much time as possible to gather his strength before the gruelling weeks ahead if he is to be in full fighting form to face off rival Adolfo Cambiaso and the reigning La Dolfina team.
