Mon 24th Aug 2015Semi Finalists decided for the Bulgari Gold CupA weekend of polo at Santa Maria sorts out the contenders for the Semi Finals
High goal The final Zone B matches for the high goal Gold Cup on Saturday 22 August led to an exciting penalty shoot-out on Sunday morning between La Indiana, Murus Sanctus and RH Polo. Three players from each team took turns with a 40 and a 60 yard hit. Murus Sanctus converted all six penalties, putting the pressure on the other two teams. RH Polo’s Von Wernich was unable to score either the 40 or the 60 yard, effectively knocking them out of the competition for the Semi Final spot. With all the pressure on his shoulders Max Charlton of La Indiana was unable to convert the 60 yard shot and so it was Murus Sanctus who will go through to play Dubai in one of the Semi Finals on Wednesday 26 August. The final Zone A matches were less closely fought, with Dubai easily beating Dos Lunas 14-9. Ayala are also through having defeated HB Polo 13-8. So it will be Lechuza vs Ayala and Dubai vs Murus Sanctus in the Semi Finals this Wednesday, while the Subsidiary Semi Finals will be between HB Polo and RH Polo, and Dos Lunas against La Indiana. Medium goal The medium goal was no less exciting, with all three matches taking place at the Rios grounds on Saturday 22 August. Equus beat Bayswater Sapphire 11-8 to secure their place in the Semi Final against Golden Goose Deluxe Brand on Tuesday 25 August. Opel-Royal Salute will not be playing in the Semi Final, having lost to Saint Mesme 10-4. Instead it will be Sainte Mesme vs Bayswater-Sapphire who fight it out for places in the Final, Bayswater-Sapphire’s earlier win against Golden Goose Deluxe Brand being enough to put them through to the second round in this tough tournament. Low goal Three matches took place on Sunday 23 August for the low goal level, to decide who will move-on to the next stage of the tournament. The first Semi Final match on Tuesday 25 August will be another battle between former finalists La Clarita and Opel-John Smith, La Clarita having beaten Mahra 11-5 on Sunday 23 August. After hard matches between all six teams at the Puente de Hierro fields of Santa Maria Polo Club, the second Semi Final will be between GSA and Valdeparras and will take place slightly later on Tuesday 25 August.
