Sun 23rd Aug 2015Drama Continues in SotograndeMore thrills and spills in the Gold Cup of the 44th Land Rover International Polo Tournament
The schedule is intense and no break given to the high goal teams, all eight of whom played their second matches on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 August. The first match to be played was Lechuza Caracas against Murus Sanctus. Things got messy in the fourth chukka when a huge rotational fall saw Facundo Sola, of Murus Sanctus, rushed off to hospital with a shoulder injury that, despite his protestations and assurances that he will be back on the field soon, will put him out of action for some time. Iaki Laprida came on in Solas place but it wasnt to be and, when the game eventually restarted, Lechuza managed to hold on to their lead and win with 13 goals to 10. Over on the main field of Los Pinos, La Indiana took on the RH Polo team, headed by 9 goaler Nico Pieres, but despite fighting hard they were left 12-10 down and still searching for that elusive win that will take them into the Semi Finals. The action continued on Friday as tough matches saw Dubai and Dos Lunas secure wins, with Dubai beating Ayala 8 goals to 7. More drama as HB Polos Terrera was hit in the face by a flying stick, knocking out his front teeth. Pite Merlos was called in as replacement; joining his old teammates, Ludo and Sebastien Pailloncy and Ignacio Toccalino, for the remainder of the match. They were unable to get it back together and lost 13-12 to the Dos Lunas side. But its not all about the high goal out here in Sotogrande, where polo all day, every day means youre never short of an exciting match to head to. Some great games took place on Thursday 20 August at the low goal level with some unexpected results. La Clarita, who have been so successful this season in Spain suffered a loss against Henry Biddles GSA team, where Rosendo Torreguitar, winner of the best new player award given out at the presentation of the high goal Silver Cup, played an absolute blinder to bring his team from 4-0 behind to a 13-11 win. Another loss for former finalists Opel John Smith, against El Caal, will make it hard for them to make it into the next round. The Valdeparras Lynx team, powered by the Espinosa de los Monteros boys, beat Mahra 8-6. And so we gear up for another weekend of polo with the final zone matches and Semi Final decider matches taking place at all levels. Stay tuned!
