The Gold Cup gets underway in Sotogrande

First zone matches for medium and high goal Gold Cups take place at Santa Maria Polo Club

Monday 17 August was busy day at Santa Maria Polo Cub, with the medium and high goal qualification rounds for the Gold Cup, Spain’s most important tournament. Things started off well for the few Brits out here, as Equus (featuring James Beim and Kian Hall) beat Yaguara 10-7 in the medium goal. However, it was downhill from there as Opel-Royal Salute, led by 6 goaler Malcolm Borwick, suffered a 15-9 defeat at the hands of Golden Goose Deluxe Brand.

The high goal story was no different as the only team to be sporting any British players, La Indiana, continued their unlucky streak and were beaten by Silver Cup finalists Lechuza Caracas. The half Brit team, with James Harper and Max Charlton, have yet to win a match out in Spain but thanks to a good Zone selection they hope to change this on Thursday in their match against RH Polo  Over on the neighbouring field, another Zone B match took place and saw a narrow 13-12 victory for Murus Sanctus over RH Polo.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 19 August, will see more action from the high goal as HB Polo take on the winners of the Silver Cup, Dubai whilst Dos Lunas go head to head with Ayala. Tomorrow also brings with it the start of the low goal Valecuatro Gold Cup played on the picturesque Puente de Hierro fields. At 11am La Clarita, the reigning champions featuring Claire and Chris Mathias alongside Freddie Horne, will face El Cañal, as Valdeparras Lynx play GSA. Later on Thursday, Opel-John Smith and Mahra Polo will take to the field to battle it out in this first round of matches.

The action is non-stop with matches every day, so keep up to date with our regular pitch-side updates!
