Cedar Croft wins its third consecutive US Arena Open

Country Farms Polo Club, Long Island, New York hosted the match

The United States Polo Association (USPA) have announced Cedar Croft the winners of the 2015 US Arena Open. Cedar Croft defeated Equuleus with a final score of 13-10 on Sunday 26 July at Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, Long Island, New York.  The championship, with roots back to 1926, represents the highest level of arena polo competition in the United States.  The 2015 tournament victory marks Cedar Croft’s third consecutive win, a feat that has never been done before in the history of The US Arena Open. Equuleus started the game with an early goal from Tommy Biddle, but Cedar Croft’s Kris Kampsen countered the attack by scoring a penalty before following on to score two more goals in quick succession to end the first chukka 3-1 to Cedar Croft. Biddle tried to even the score in the second chukka with two more goals, but Kampsen scored again, ending the chukka 4-3 still in favour of Cedar Croft.

In the third chukka, Equuleus took an early lead with the team scoring three goals, two of which were on penalties. Yet, Cedar Croft retaliated with another four goals, two of which were also on penalties to end the chukka with Cedar Croft still ahead 8-6. In the fourth and final chukka, Cedar Croft and Equuleus exchanged goals, and at one point were tied 9-9, with Biddle scoring back-to-back goals. Cedar Croft, however, were the final victors, scoring a total of five goals in the fourth chukka, to end the match 13-10. Cedar Croft’s Kampsen was named Most Valuable Player, having scored 11 of the team’s 13 goals. Tommy Biddle’s 9-year-old mare Pandora won Best Playing Pony.

This year’s match featured several of the highest handicapped arena polo players in the world; Tommy Biddle (10), Felipe Viana (7) and Kris Kampsen (7).  British player Jonny Good teamed up with Biddle and Dimenna for runners-up Equuleus. Viana, a USPA Interscholastic Champion, was also a core member of the Team USPA squad who nearly won the FIP World Polo Championship earlier this year.
