Mon 18th May 2015Last Minute Victory for Shalimar in Centenary Event La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Centenary Trophy On Sunday 17 May, the 2015 La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Centenary Trophy ended in a close fought fifth chukka after James Harper’s goal in the last thirty seconds won the tournament for Shalimar. The match capped an unbeatable weekend for James Harper, who had come from his win against The Americas on the Saturday in the St. Regis International Cup. Shalimar took on the previously undefeated Clarita to emerge victorious at the La Martina sponsored event, played in memory of the late Queen Mother at Guards over the first two weeks in May. Having led the play for the first four chukkas, Clarita’s victory was foiled by a goal from Shalimar in the last 30 seconds of the fourth chukka, resulting in extra time. The sub-final was equally hotly contested, with Alan Fall’s Mad Dogs winning against Jonathan Munro Ford’s Black Eagles, 7-6. James Harper’s pony Binca was awarded the Best Playing Pony prize. Guards also hosted the Inter-Schools Copenhagen Cup, which this year was won narrowly by Harrow School from Wellington College, 3-2½, whilst the sub-final was won by Eton against Stowe, 4-1½. Polo Times sponsored the Most Valuable Player Prizes for each team.
