Mon 16th Mar 2015Semi Finalists determined for USPA Gold CupHigh goal continues at International Polo Club Palm Beach
A polo-filled Sunday decided the Semi Finalists who would face Orchard Hill and Audi on Wednesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach in the 2015 USPA Piaget Gold Cup tournament. Alegria knocked Valiente out of the competition, whilst the distinct shirts of Las Monjitas defeated Lechuza Caracas. In the opening match, Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz (2), Alejo Tranco (6), Guillermo Terrera (8) and Adolfo Cambiaso (10)) took the early lead over Alegria (Julian Mannix (4), Hilario Ulloa (9), Mariano Aguerre (9) and Sterling Giannico(4)), but by half-time the scoreboard read 5-all. The Mannix team adopted control in the fourth, notching up three goals whilst keeping Valiente at bay and they didn’t let up in the fifth. Valiente crept closer to their lead in the penultimate chukka, but still trailed 10-8, which set the tone for the rest of the game. Aguerre and Ulloa scored a goal apiece in the opening minutes of the sixth taking the scores to 12-8 whilst Valiente’s shots to goal were off the mark. The 9 goaler, Ulloa scored another two goals – his fifth and sixth of the game – to convincingly defeat Bob Jornayvaz’s Valiente 12-8. Las Monijtas (Camilo Bautista (0), Facundo Sola (8), Sebastian Merlos (9) and Eduardo Novillo Astrada (9)) then faced Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas (1), Nico Pieres (8), Juan Martin Nero (10) and Agustin Garcia Grossi (7)) in a low-scoring Quarter Final. The scores reflected how evenly matched the teams were early on in the game, with only 5 goals apiece chalked up on the scoreboard at the end of the fourth. However, Las Monjitas dominated in the last remaining chukkas with field goals and penalty conversions aplenty, leaving Lechuza struggling to keep a foot-hold in the game. Despite fielding the mighty Juan Martin Nero, Lechuza couldn’t overcome Las Monijtas and they were knocked out of the tournament with a loss of 11-6. Facundo Sola was awarded Most Valuable Player whilst Nico Pieres’ Tapado took the Best Playing Pony honours. Alegria will play Orchard Hill (Steve Van Andel (0), Facundo Pieres (10), Polito Pieres (9) and Ezequiel Ferrario (7)) whilst Las Monjitas will be up against Audi (Marc Ganzi (1), Rodrigo Andrade (9), Gonzalito Pieres (9) and Freddie Mannix (6)) in Wednesday’s Semi Finals.
