Ylvisaker Memorial Cup continues

Casablanca and Villa del Lago win games this week

Argentine 9 goaler Polito Pieres led Villa Del Lago (Jim Zenni, Agustin Obregon, Polito Pieres and Julian de Lusarreta) to a win over Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Gonzalo Deltour, Inaki Laprida and Jeff Blake) on Tuesday 10 February in the 2015 Ylvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club.  Pieres scored twelve goals for Villa Del Lago adding to their convincing winning score of 17-13.

Polito Pieres wasted little time in displaying his talented mallet skills as he scored the first two goals of the game followed by another from team-mate Agustin Obregon to make the score 3-0. Inaki Laprida finally made a mark on the scoreboard for Tonkawa with just 2 minutes 12 seconds left in the first chukka.  With just 35 seconds left on the clock Villa del Lago gave away a penalty 1 to Tonkawa to close the gap to 3-2 still in favour of Villa del Lago. Gonzalo Deltour scored in the final seconds to even the chukka to tie on 3-3.

Pieres scored twice in less than three minutes in the second chukka and converted a penalty to take the lead 6-3, but didn’t score again until the final minute of the chukka to make 7-3. In the third chukka,Tonkawa make a mark on the score board again with Deltour converting a penalty to make 7-4. This was followed by Julian de Lusarreta taking over from Pieres to widen the gap further 9-4, with a final goal of the chukka from Pieres 10-4 at half time.

Pieres could not be stopped over the next three chukkas increasing the lead at each turn of the ball. Deltour and Blake had their work cut out for them as they steadily tried to score, only managing another nine goals between them over the next three chukkas. The final score of17-13 was the third defeat for Tonkawa in the tournament.

On Monday 9 February the re-scheduled game between Casablanca and Gateway Merchants was completed with a win for Casablanca 12-10. Luis Escobar, who suffered a nasty fall earlier in the tournament for Gateway Merchants, is expected to make a full recovery.

Ylvisaker Cup play continues on Wednesday with games between Coca-Cola and Gateway Merchant.
