Mon 9th Feb 2015England Ladies triumph in New ZealandThe girls fly the flag whilst the English men’s team lose to home squad
On Saturday 7 February, Kihikihi Polo Club hosted The International Day, which featured two Test Matches pitting the English ladies’ and men’s’ teams against opposing New Zealand sides. England Ladies (Lucy Taylor, Lottie Lamacraft, Fiona Alexander and Harriet McKelvie) took on a New Zealand line-up of Suzie Hamilton, Renn Erceg, Missy Browne and Maddy Rankin for The Bridges Insurance Ladies International in the first match of the day. It was a close game with England just claiming victory by a narrow one-goal lead. In a week that witnessed a strong spotlight shone on women’s polo, it was a terrific 5-4 win, undoubtedly assisted by the experience of 1 goaler Lucy Taylor. Later that afternoon, James Beim led Tom Morley, Max Charlton and James Harper onto the Nga Rakau grounds to play against brothers Tommy and Craig Wilson, John Paul Clarkin – the highest handicapped player on the pitch – and Simon Keyte. Both Charlton and Harper had recently flown in from playing in The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, but they were clearly unaffected by jet lag and powered through the game. At half-time, the scores were tied at 5-all with both teams vying for the trophy. However, in the second half, the home side took control of the game and won the match 9 goals to 8. It was mixed success for the England International squad, but all agreed that it was an exceptional day of polo at Kihikihi Polo Club. Photograph: The winning England Ladies team line-up.
