McLaren Cup Semi Finalists confirmed

Final four features Zedan, Bin Drai, Ghantoot and Desert Palm 1

The Semi Finals of The McLaren Cup have been decided. This year, the tournament, which is part of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series (Dubai Open), has welcomed 10 teams to the annual competition, with Bin Drai, Ghantoot, Desert Palm 2, and Zedan securing a place in this week’s Semi Finals. Amr Zedan’s Zedan Polo Team were the first side to qualify through to the Semi Finals with Tariq Albwardy’s Desert Palm 2 team going on to defeat Edrees 6-4 to earn their place in the final four. The two final Semi Finalists, however, had to be decided with a penalty shootout. Habtoor Polo, Ghantoot and Bin Drai Polo came head to head on Sunday 1 February, with Ghantoot and Bin Drai Polo obtaining an advantage over Habtoor Polo and consequently will go on to play in Semi Finals which take place tomorrow (Tuesday 3 February). Habtoor on the other hand will now face Mahra in the Subsidiary Finals on Wednesday 4 February.
The tournament, which is held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, have been decided is now in its sixth year of existence. Mohammed Al Habtoor, who founded the event said “The Dubai Gold Cup Series gets better and better each year. In a short space of time, The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series has become the highest handicapped tournament in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.” The tournament began as a 10-12 goal competition, but over the years it has continued to increase in standard and this year the tournament welcomed teams playing off an 18 goal handicap for the first time.
The Semi Finals will see Desert Palm 2 face Bin Drai while Zedan will take on Ghantoot. The Subsidiary Finals’ line-up features Habtoor Polo vs. Mahra and Abu Dhabi vs. Desert Palm 1.
