Mon 2nd Feb 2015Surprises and scares at the first weekend of Ylvisaker CupInternational Polo Club Palm Beach plays host to third 20 goal tournament of the season
It was a weekend of close calls and surprises as the 20 goal Ylvisaker tournament got underway at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The tournament opening matches took place on Saturday with Valiente (Tommy Beresford, Peke Gonzalez, Santi Torres and Sapo Caset) versus FlexJet (Melissa Ganzi, Cody Ellis, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Rodrigo Andrade) and Gateway Merchants (Pelon Escapite, Marianito Obregon, Luis Escobar and Scott Swerdlin) versus Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Guille Aguero, Mark Tomlinson and Jan Bollini). Coca Cola (Gillian Johnston, Sugar Erskine, Julio Arellano and Mason Wroe) also played Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Gonzalo Deltour, Inaki Laprida and Jeff Blake), but sadly injuries marred the days’ play. Valiente featured a reshuffled line-up after patron, Bob Jornayvaz was sidelined nursing a hit to the elbow, whilst his son, Robert was recovering from a fall in a practice match which had left him spending a night in hospital under observation. English 2 goaler Tommy Beresford and 1 goaler Peke Gonzalez abley filled in for the Valiente side whilst Melissa Ganzi’s FlexJet side featured a completely different line-up to her Joe Barry team. Valiente led from the start, with an on-fire Beresford scoring three of his team’s goals in the first half. FlexJet’s defense stepped up in the fourth before Brazilian 9 goaler Rodrigo Andrade came alive in the sixth, scoring three consecutive goals and taking FlexJet to level pegging with Valiente. Despite such a dramatic effort, Valiente still rode out the winners 9 goals to 7. The second match of the afternoon between Gateway Merchants and Casablanca was suspended after nearly 4 and a half chukkas, with the latter holding on to narrow lead. The 18 goal Casablanca side – featuring England team member, Mark Tomlinson – received a goal on handicap and managed to keep up the pressure on their opposition. Luis Escobar converted a penalty for his team in the fifth chukka, but moments later a collision between him and his teammate, Pelon Escapite, saw both players hit the ground in front of the goalmouth. Escapite got up straight away, but Escobar remained on the ground. Polo Times understands that he was treated on the ground, before he was transported by helicopter to Delray Medical Centre. His condition is said to be improving. Team representatives decided to suspend the game with the scoreboard reading 9-8. Gillian Johnston’s Coca Cola team enjoyed a strong lead throughout their match against Jeff Hildebrand’s Tonkawa. At half-time the score displayed 7-3 to Coca Cola and set the tone for the remainder of the match despite Jeff Blake and Gonzalo Deltour attempting a come back. Julio Arellano scored seven of his team’s eventual 12 goals, which won Coca Cola their first match of the tournament. | | Other top stories Wed 17th Apr 2024 Polo Times April Issue Out Now This issue packed with insights, reports & features
