Fri 30th Jan 2015Wins for Cartier & BMW at Snow Polo World Cup St. MoritzFirst day of play is over in the Engadine Valley
Snowfall over night and temperatures plummeting to -13 didn’t affect a great first day of polo at The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz. After last night’s team presentations at the Kulm Hotel’s Sunny Bar, the 16 players were ready to take to the frozen lake to kick-start the tournament. The first match of the day was between title-holders, Cartier (Jonathan Munro Ford, Max Charlton, Chris Hyde and Jamie Morrison) and Trois Pommes (Tutti Wolfensberger, Cedric Schweri, Pepe Riglos and Piki Diaz Alberdi). With a team handicap of 14, Trois Pommes started with a half goal advantage, but Cartier’s Max Charlton was quick to take the lead with a goal in the first chukka. Snow polo stalwart, Piki Diaz Alberdi then put his Trois Pommes team ahead adding a field goal to their tally and taking the scores to 1.5-1. However Chris ‘The Prof’ Hyde was keen that the Cartier team stayed on course to win their third Snow Polo World Cup, clocking up the winning shots to secure the low-scoring game 3-1.5. The second game was a much closer affair with both teams trading places on the leader board until the last minute. Badrutt’s Palace (Richard Fagan, Richard le Poer, James Harper and Max Hutchinson) faced lower handicapped team, BMW (Rommy Gianni, Paolo Netzsch, Dario Musso and Lucas Labat) and both were fighting for victory. At the end of the first chukka, the hotel team of Badrutt’s, were leading by a mere half goal with the scoreboard reading 2 goals to 1.5. Max Hutchinson increased their margin, but BMW’s Dario Musso was quick to reply with a penalty shot. Badrutt’s notched up a fourth goal, but an on-fire Lucas Labat scored twice in rapid succession to take BMW into the lead. Badrutt’s James Harper – playing his first tournament on snow – converted a penalty, but it was not enough to clinch the match and BMW rode off the frozen lake the winners 5.5 goals to 5. Play continues tomorrow with Badrutt’s Palace versus Cartier and Trois Pommes versus BMW.
