St. Moritz Snow Polo World Cup kicks off tomorrow

Four teams converge on frozen lake for coveted Cartier Trophy

The St. Moritz Snow Polo World Cup, played on the frozen lake in the Engadine Valley in Switzerland, begins tomorrow Friday 31 January. Players and ponies have been arriving in St. Moritz throughout the week to acclimatise to the snow and temperatures before the first official practice chukkas today. Despite heavy snowfall creating construction problems for the organisers earlier in the week, lake conditions are being closely monitored and players will take to the snow polo pitch tomorrow.
The first game will start at midday for The Badrutt’s Palace Cup between team Cartier (Jonathan Munro Ford, Max Charlton, Chris Hyde and Jamie Morrison) and team Trois Pommes (Tutti Wolfensberger, Cedric Schweri, Pepe Riglos and Piki Diaz Alberdi). Having won the tournament for the past two years, Cartier will be looking to make it a hat-trick and will be a tough team for Trois Pommes to beat. The second match of the afternoon will be for The Slupinski Cup between BMW (Rommy Gianni, Paolo Netzsch, Dario Musso and Lucas Labat) and Badrutt’s Palace Hotel (Richard Fagan, Max Hutchinson, Richard Le Poer and James Harper). Play continues on Saturday before the big Final on Sunday 1 February.
