Thu 22nd Jan 2015Thailand Polo King’s Cup is underwayGonzalo Pieres’ presence in tournament line-up helps make it highest handicapped tournament ever played in Asia
On Tuesday 20 January, the Thailand Polo Association kicked off their biannual Thailand Polo King’s Cup Tournament, welcoming a record six teams to VR Sports Club, the only polo club in Bangkok. This year, the tournament is being played off an increased team handicap, with Gonzalo Pieres playing in Thailand for the first time ever. As part of the King Power line-up, Pieres is once again playing alongside Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha and Marcos Di Paola, who together reached the Final of The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup in their England high goal debut. The tournament also sees HRH Prince Jefri Bolkiah returning for his second year with his Ahmibah Brunei side, while HRH Princess Azemah has entered her ‘Brunei Polo’ team for the first time. Also taking part in this edition of the Thailand Polo King’s Cup is Shailai Liu’s ‘Tang Polo’, Joevy Beh’s ‘BP Healthcare’ and Michael Romero’s ‘Global Port’. Playing under HPA rules, the first two teams to take to the field were King Power and Tang Polo, with Pieres helping his King Power side to claim the first win of the tournament, 9 goals to 7.5. Ahmibah Brunei then went on to gain the honours against BP Healthcare in the second match of the day, 9.5-6. While Gonzalo Pieres had made his Thailand Polo debut on Tuesday, the VR Fields then welcomed another ‘polo great’ to their grounds on Wednesday as Pablo MacDonough had to replace an injured Ignacio Novilla Astrada for Brunei Polo. The two 10 goalers, who had last come up against each other in the Final of The Argentine Open, produced some of the best polo Thailand polo has ever seen, with King Power acquiring a 11-9.5 win. Global Port secured an opening victory, defeating BP Healthcare 9.5-8 in the earlier match yesterday afternoon. Action is set to continue today with Tang Polo taking on Brunei Polo and Global Port facing Ahmibah Brunei. The Finals are due to be played at 17.30 on Saturday 24 January.
