Mon 12th Jan 2015Joe Barry Memorial Cup updateA busy weekend of 20 goal polo at International Polo Club Palm Beach
On Saturday, Lucchese (John Muse, Andres Weisz, Magoo Laprida and Nico Pieres) edged ahead of CT Energia (Alessandro Bazzoni, Kris Kampsen, Joao Paulo Ganon and Nick Manifold) to win the first match of the weekend, 13 goals to 11. Despite being equal at half-time on 6-all, top goal scorer of the match, Nico Pieres helped his team take the lead. Audi (Marc Ganzi, Nic Roldan, Freddie Mannix and Lucas Lalor) then took the field against last year’s Joe Barry Finalists, Tonkawa (Lucas Arellano, Gonzalo Deltour, Inaki Laprida and Jeff Blake). The former held onto a narrow lead after the third chukka, but the Tonkawa opposition didn’t make it easy for them. Being just a goal ahead in the sixth chukka, Audi found it difficult to penetrate the Tonkawa defense, whilst Jeff Blake and Co couldn’t find the posts. Finally Roldan scored his fifth field goal of the match before the final bell rang and Audi rode off the pitch the winners, 10 goals to 8. Yesterday, Sunday 11 January, Orchard Hill (Steve Van Andel, Lucas Criado, Facundo Pieres and Remy Muller) registered their second win of the tournament closely beating Merchant Hub (Scott Swerdlin, Mariano Obrgeon, Facundo Obregon and Luis Escobar) 12-11. The 19 goal Merchant Hub team received one goal on handicap and capitalized on this by taking an early lead of 2-1 at the end of the first chukka. After a slow start to the tournament where Villa Del Lago resoundingly beat them, the Merchant Hub team was clearly putting up a tough fight. However, in the fourth and fifth chukkas, Orchard Hill surged ahead with a three-goal lead, and it looked like Merchant Hub were out of the running. However, a rally of goals and a penalty conversion from the lower handicapped side took them to within a goal of their opposition and it looked as if the game may go into an extra chukka. As the final bell rang though, it was Orchard Hill who secured the win, 12-11. 16-year-old Justin Daniels replaced Melissa Ganzi for Flight Options’ first league match of their Joe Barry campaign. He joined Guille Aguero, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Juan Bollini to beat 10 goaler, Juan Martin Nero and his Leachuza teammates (Victor Vargas, Marco Alberdi and Martin Espain), 8-7. The final 20 goal match of the weekend was between Villa Del Lago (Jim Zenni, Agustin Obregon, Polito Pieres and Julian de Lusaretta) and Coca Cola (Gillian Johnston, Sugar Erskine, Julio Arellano and Mason Wroe). Villa Del Lago racked up their second win of the tournament when they defeated Gillian Johnston’s team 13 goals to 12. The tournament continues Wednesday 14 January with Lucchese versus Audi and CT Energia versus Tonkawa. Photograph: Facundo Pieres for Orchard Hill in The Joe Barry Memorial Cup.
