A new-look Orchard Hill secure a win in Joe Barry Cup

League stages of 20 goal continues at International Polo Club Palm Beach

The first match of the day was played between Steve Van Andel’s Orchard Hill (Lucas Criado, Facundo Pieres and Remy Muller) and Gillian Johnston’s Coca Cola (Sugar Erskine, Julio Arellano and Mason Wroe). As two established set-ups on the Florida high goal scene, there were great expectations for a close game of polo – and the teams didn’t disappoint. The first three chukkas were evenly matched, with the scores remaining within a goal of each other, but the fourth was very much owned by the Orchard Hill quartette who scorched ahead with a six-goal lead. However, Coca Cola took back control in the penultimate chukka, closing the gap to a manageable two goals and riding off the pitch with the scoreboard reading 10-8 to Orchard Hill. Rock-solid defense from both teams in the sixth meant that only Coca Cola’s Julio Arellano managed to slot a ball through the posts. By the time the final bell rang, Pieres’ five field goals and four penalties alongside Van Andel’s single goal throughout the match, meant that Orchard Hill won the game, 10-9.
The following game was between Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Marcos Alberdi, Martin Espain and Juan Martin Nero) and Enigma (Jerome Wirth, Jeff Hall, Matias MacDonough and Carlucho Arellano). Despite Enigma’s Jeff Hall scoring the opening goal of the match, it was 10 goaler, Juan Martin Nero who took Lechuza into the lead, notching up a field goal and two 40-yard penalties to finish the first chukka 3-1. However, Matias MacDonough and his teammates regained the game over the next three chukkas, staying ahead of their opposition and riding off the pitch at the end of the fourth with a lead of three goals. Lechuza responded accordingly, adding pressure to close the gap, before retaking the lead, but Enigma’s Jeff Hall managed an equalising goal in the dying seconds of the sixth, forcing the game into extra time. Barely two minutes into the seventh chukka, Martin Nero secured yet another goal for his Lechuza team, winning the match 11 goals to 10.
The tournament continues Saturday 10 January:
Lucchese (John Muse, Andres Weisz, Magoo Laprida and Nico Pieres) versus CT Energia (Alessandro Bazzoni, Kris Kampsen, Joao Ganon and Nick Manifold).
Audi (Marc Ganzi, Freddie Mannix, Nic Roldan and Lucas Lalor) versus Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Gonzalo Deltour, Inaki Laprida and Jeff Blake).
