Sun 20th Jul 2014Dubai lifts Gold CupAdolfo Cambiaso inspires his team to victory over King Power at Cowdray Park
DUBAI WON THE Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, after defeating King Power in the final. Ten-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso led Rashid Albwardy’s team, also featuring Diego Cavanagh and Ali Paterson, to a 13-11 victory over Top Srivaddhanaprabha’s King Power side at Cowdray Park Polo Club. Dubai was the first team to get on the scoreboard, and held a fragile 7-5 lead by halftime, after three chukkas of whistle-filled play. But King Power were not giving in without a fight, and ten-goaler Gonzalito Pieres led the team, featuring Pablo Llorente and Marcos Di Paola, to an impressive comeback to level the score at 10-10 in the fifth chukka. However, it was Dubai that was able to take control in the sixth, bringing the score to 13-11. This is the fourth time Dubai has lifted the Gold Cup, having been runners-up to Zacara in 2013. By contrast, this is the first year King Power has contested the English high-goal. A full report will feature in the August issue of Polo Times, out next week.
