DUBAI CAUSED AN upset in yesterday’s Gold Cup league match, as they became the first team to beat Zacara since 2012.
Lyndon Lea’s Zacara team has enjoyed an unbeaten run of 23 matches, having won last year's Queen’s and Gold Cups, and this year’s Queen’s Cup, but went down to an impressive Dubai side in yesterday’s league match.
Lea, Facundo Pieres, Matt Perry and Gonzalo Deltour were unable to produce their usual magic and lost to the Dubai line-up of Tommy Beresford, Adolfo Cambiaso, Ali Paterson and Diego Cavanagh by a hefty 14-8.
Both teams had already secured their places in the Gold Cup quarter-finals, which take place this weekend, but the loss will no doubt come as a blow to Zacara, as their title defence looks less assured.
Dubai and Black Bears now have four wins out of four under their belts, with King Power and Lucchese unbeaten after three matches. The quarter-finals take place on 12-13 July, with the final on Sunday 20 July.
